Many thanks to Kansas Education Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson, who visited in person and kicked off Monday's professional development day for Parsons teachers with strong words of encouragement that their hard work is seen and appreciated . Watson recognized the difficulties teachers face and praised them for their efforts which are making a proven difference in students' academics and lives. Despite facing high poverty rates, the highest foster care rate per capita in the state, and other at-risk factors, Watson said Parsons schools are moving more students into higher performance levels on state assessments, improving graduation rates and increasing post-secondary success rates, among other great accomplishments, which are being noted not just locally, but at the state level.

As a part of social/emotional learning , teachers have been educated in recent years about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and how they impact children and families. Monday, during professional development, SparkWheel HOPE facilitator Rachelle Soden taught about Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) and ways to increase Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences (HOPE). Soden shared that research indicates the absence of positive childhood experiences may be more damaging to long term health outcomes than the presence of adverse experiences. She added that studies show that Positive Childhood Experiences help prevent ACEs, block toxic stress and promote healing. Teachers are in prime positions to provide positive experiences for students, making a significant difference in their lives.

Guest author Sarah Thomsen, of Parsons, was one of the distinguished readers at Garfield during World Read Aloud Day. She read her book "Chocolate Moo." Thomsen visited with students about writing, too. She was among dozens of guest readers visiting Garfield and Lincoln today.
